# Vetting a Digital Asset Manager: QuestionsFamily Offices Should Ask

Selecting a digital asset manager is not the same exercise as selecting a traditional hedge fund or private equity sponsor. The asset class is younger, the regulatory perimeter is still forming, and the operational infrastructure, custody, key management, settlement carries risks that have no direct analogue in conventional markets.

For family offices, whose mandate is capital preservation across generations rather than short-term outperformance, this raises the bar for diligence
considerably. Choosing the right digital asset manager starts before looking at performance numbers. It starts with understanding how they operate, protect assets, and manage potential conflicts. This article covers the key questions family offices should ask.

### Regulatory Status and Licensing

Digital asset managers operate under a patchwork of regulatory regimes that vary by jurisdiction and by the specific activities performed, advisory, custody, trading, or fund management. A manager's registration status affects everything from investor protections to reporting obligations. *Ask the manager:* Which regulators oversee your firm, and under what specific registrations or licenses do you operate in each relevant jurisdiction?

### Institutional Custody and Asset Segregation

Custody is arguably the single most consequential decision in digital asset investing. Family offices should understand precisely who holds the underlying assets, whether the manager uses a qualified third-party custodian, and whether client assets are segregated from the manager's own operating capital or trading positions. *Ask the manager:* Are client assets held with an independent, regulated custodian, and are they legally and operationally segregated from house assets?

### Security and Cybersecurity Controls

Because digital assets can be irreversibly transferred once a private key is compromised, security architecture deserves the same scrutiny typically reserved for financial controls. This includes key management practices, use of multi-signature or multi-party computation schemes, penetration testing cadence, and insurance coverage. *Ask the manager:* What key management architecture do you use, who has signing authority, and what insurance covers custodial or operational loss?

### Investment Philosophy and Strategy

A manager's stated strategy should be internally consistent and clearly differentiated whether the approach is directional, market-neutral, venture-oriented, or yield-focused. Family offices should assess whether the strategy aligns with their own risk tolerance and time horizon, rather than chasing recent performance. *Ask the manager:* How would this strategy perform in a prolonged drawdown, and what specific market conditions does it depend on?

### Track Record and Experience

Digital asset markets have experienced multiple boom-and-bust cycles. A manager's tenure through at least one full cycle, including how the firm and its principals responded to periods of acute stress, offers more insight than short-term returns alone. *Ask the manager:* How did the firm and its key decision-makers navigate prior periods of severe market dislocation?

### Counterparty and Platform Risk

Beyond the manager itself, family offices should map every counterparty in the chain exchanges, prime brokers, lending desks, custodians and understand concentration exposure to any single venue. *Ask the manager:* Which counterparties do you rely on, and what is your maximum exposure to any single venue at any time?

### Liquidity and Access to Assets

Redemption terms, lock-ups, and gates should be understood in plain language, along with how liquidity terms would hold up during a market-wide stress event rather than under normal conditions. *Ask the manager:* What are the redemption terms in both normal and stressed market conditions?

### Fees and Pricing Transparency

Fee structures in digital asset management can include management fees, performance fees, and less visible costs such as trading spreads or custody markups. Full transparency on total cost of ownership is essential. *Ask the manager:* Can you provide a complete breakdown of all fees, including any embedded or pass-through costs?

### Governance and Decision-Making

Understanding who makes investment, risk, and operational decisions and what checks exist on concentrated authority helps family offices assess key-person risk and internal accountability. *Ask the manager:* What is your governance structure, and what independent oversight exists over investment and risk decisions?

### Reporting and Transparency

Family offices should expect reporting standards comparable to those in traditional asset management, including independent fund administration and regular, verifiable position-level reporting. *Ask the manager:* Do you use an independent fund administrator, and what does standard reporting include?

### Fit Within the Family's Broader Digital Asset Strategy

Finally, manager selection should not occur in isolation. It should reflect the family's overall governance framework, custody architecture, and risk appetite for the asset class as a whole.

### The Bottom Line

Vetting a digital asset manager is ultimately an exercise in governance. The questions that matter most on custody, security, regulatory standing, and conflicts are the same questions that anchor a family's broader digital asset strategy. Manager selection should be treated not as a standalone investment decision, but as one component of a coherent, risk-aware approach to long-term wealth preservation in this asset class.
